Helping Your Pet Transition to Somerford Raw & Natural 🧡
Every dog and cat is different. While many pets dive straight into Somerford Raw & Natural, others need a little extra time to get used to the new flavours, smells and textures.
If your furry family member is a little unsure at first, don’t worry. A little patience and encouragement can go a long way. Here are some tips from the Somerford community to help make the transition easier.
1. Take it slowly
Some pets do best with a gradual change. Start with around 80% of their regular food and 20% Somerford Raw, then gradually increase the amount of raw food with each meal until they are happily eating Somerford on its own.
2. Keep mealtimes simple
Offer their meal and give them some quiet time to eat. If they aren't interested, pop it back in the fridge and try again at their next normal mealtime.
Try to avoid offering lots of different treats or alternative foods straight away. Sometimes our pets simply learn that if they wait long enough, something else might appear!
3. Add a little encouragement
For particularly fussy eaters, try adding a small amount of something familiar and tasty to get them started.
A drizzle of bone broth over the top can make their new meal even more tempting. You can also mix through a little grated cheese as a short-term encouragement while they discover their new food.
4. Try serving it a little warmer
Some dogs and cats aren't keen on food served straight from the fridge. Allowing their Somerford meal to come closer to room temperature can make the aroma and flavour more appealing.
If needed during the transition, you can also lightly cook the food at first, then gradually cook it less and less as your pet becomes comfortable with their new diet, working towards serving it raw.
5. Try another protein
Just like us, our pets have their favourites!
If your dog or cat doesn't love the first protein you offer, don't give up. Somerford Raw & Natural has a wonderful range of single-protein varieties, along with special limited editions, giving you plenty of flavours to explore together.
Once they're settled into raw feeding, rotating between different proteins can also help keep mealtimes interesting and give your pet plenty of variety.
6. Most importantly, stick with it 🧡
Changing a pet's diet can sometimes take a little patience, particularly if they've eaten the same type of food for many years.
Celebrate the little wins. A sniff today, a taste tomorrow and an empty bowl before you know it!
Our Somerford community is always here to help you along the way. The goal isn't to rush them, but to help your dog or cat become comfortable and confident with their new way of eating.

From a Fussy Eater to an Empty Bowl
Sometimes the pets who take the most convincing end up becoming our biggest Somerford fans!
One of our customers, Bree B, had already tried several different premade raw foods without success. She decided to give Somerford a try as a last option and was amazed by the difference. Read Below
"BREE B -11th Oct - I googled raw pet foods in Newcastle. I saw it two months ago when I was struggling to find something she would eat but I didn't bother because I had tried leading raw brand premade patties, leaps and bounds premade patties and big dog barf patties and she would not touch any of them! They even smelt terrible to my nose so I figured your raw would be the same and a waste of my time. Desperation got the better of me this week and I thought I'd just exhaust my last option not tried. Somerford raw smells NOTHING like any of the other pre made raw meals I have tried. It smelt appetizing to my own nose and smelt like nothing other than super fresh beautiful meat! She even devoured every last piece of the veggie bits in there that I was certain she'd leave behind! I am just so excited to find something she can be excited about eating."
